Measures of Test Effectiveness

Abstract:

Today’s enterprises need to conduct thorough functional testing of their mission-critical applications to ensure that all business processes work as expected. Testing requires a significant investment in terms of time and effort. Each year, companies spend hundreds of thousands of hours testing software.

Testing activity is distributed in phases in a typical waterfall model of software development. We have phases like Unit Testing, Integration Testing, System Testing, User Acceptance Testing etc. The checkpoints required at each phase of software testing are in most of the cases mutually exclusive of each other. Ensuring Test Effectiveness requires monitoring, measurement and analysis of these checkpoints. Needless to mention all these would be possible if and only if the compliance of the defined checkpoints is carried out.

This paper will be useful as a reference to QA Team in any organization as well as any person associated with testing related activities. This can also act as a good input for Senior Management.
