Why the software industry is missing a trick! – A guide to data-centric approaches and techniques

Paper Presentation at STeP-IN SUMMIT 2009

Huw Price, Managing Director, Grid-Tools

Data-centric testing is a new and complementary approach to improving your end-to-end testing strategy. Huw Price will outline new data-centric approaches for managing complex testing processes and cover some of the quick wins that can be achieved with little effort.

This presentation will argue that existing approaches have been vendor driven; that tool-sets have failed to keep-up with academic innovation and the software testing industry is missing a trick!!

With the advent of SOA, Data flow modelling, XML standards and advanced data mining techniques, the time is now to critically analyze how we test and how we could change the argument “Let’s just use production data”. This argument is no longer valid, and this presentation's main objective is to share with conviction that it is time for a change.

SOA Testing Strategy

Track Session at STeP-IN Forum's HSTC 2011 (September 2011)
Ashwin Palaparthi, Vice President, AppLabs

SOA testing has increasingly become a strategic investment in delivering the promise of service orientation of the enterprise IT.
A world-class testing strategy should address the following key dimensions:
  • Align with SDLC models (waterfall and agile)
  • Factor the right quality attributes (functionality, performance, security, robustness and interoperability)

Challenges and methods for Functional and Performance Testing of SOA applications

Paper Presentation at STeP-IN SUMMIT 2009

Ashish K Mathur, Senior Development Team Lead and Architect, IBM Rational

SOA applications by their nature are loosely-coupled with re-usable components that facilitate the development of complex and composite applications with low risk to meet customer needs. This leads to a couple of interesting observations. One is that simply testing the application as a whole is not sufficient. The other is that testing of individual components as stand alone entities becomes absolutely crucial. Continuous and automated testing of both the functional and performance aspects of the application, as the components and applications evolves, tends to become a necessity. This session will explore the various challenges of testing the functional and performance aspects of SOA applications and the methods to accomplish the testing.

SOA Testing Challenges and Proven Practices

Paper Presentation at STeP-IN SUMMIT 2009

Guruprasad Gopalakrishnan, Practice Head, SOA Testing, Wipro Technologies

Services Oriented Architecture organizes the discrete functions contained in applications and service enablers into interoperable, standards-based services that can be orchestrated and reused quickly to meet business needs. It delivers differentiated business capabilities and services through the assembly of autonomous business and technology capabilities.

Traditional testing involves Code-level and Web based testing where the business functions are achieved through different user interfaces. SOA not only involves testing business functions but also several other aspects which make business functions successful.
