In the current industry scenario, any application, web-based or otherwise is expected to cater to the needs of a varied customer base which in turn means support for a large number of platforms on a large number of devices. Each additional supported platform adds a layer of complexity to the QA of any software developed. You can draw similar parallels to web browser compatibility, and drill down into compatibility with popular plugins. Or to make the example apply to server based software, take compatibility with different operating systems or virtualization software, libraries, and concurrently running services.
