A software development project will typically have 25-30% effort spent on testing the system. A testing project will have typically 9 different phases from Test requirements gathering to Release and maintenance of the system. This presentation discusses 3 important phases in a testing project life cycle and some tools and techniques which could be used in each of these phases. These tools and techniques are encouraged to use in a testing project in the expectation of achieving the following objectives.

• The testing process is carried out in a systematic way
• The system under test (SUT) will have minimum possible residual defects when it is ready for release.
• Testing effort is minimum possible

The test phases covered in the presentation are 1) Test Effort Estimation / Distribution 2) Test Area sequencing and 3) Change Impact handling. The presentation gives the details of the importance of these phases and method of how to use the suggested tools. It covers the details of how Wipro achieves this using its internally developed tool CoDeC.

Speaker's Background

Ganesh Arunachala, Head of Quality - Horizontals, Wipro Technologieshas a Masters Degree in Physics with Applied electronics from REC Trichy. He has over 22 years of software industry experience out of which 19 years are in Wipro. In his current role, he heads the quality function for the software & infrastructure technology practices. Ganesh Arunachala has been an active player in Wipro's Quality & Process Improvement Journey such as ISO, CMM, CMMI, etc. He has been a lead auditor & part of the Core Assessment team. He has authored a methodology for applying Six Sigma in software development. As a Master Black belt & also Certified Lean Leader, he has trained over 175 Black belts & lean leaders.
He is actively involved in researching software engineering areas & deploying them into tools that are useful for the practitioners. He Has conceptualized & led a team in the development & deployment of tools like Orthogonal array based testing & Software reliability growth models.

Ajikumar TN is a Senior Manager in the Testing Services Division of Wipro Technologies, Bangalore. He holds a B.Tech Degree in Electronics & Communication Engineering and an MBA in Software Enterprises Management from Indian Institute of Management, Bangalore. He has got more than 11 years of experience in Software industry and has worked for enterprises like BPL Telecom earlier.
