Optimizing Test Coverage Using Orthogonal arrays Antony Prabu Raj — Senior Systems Analyst — Accenture |
Antony Prabhu has 9+ yrs of IT experience spread between Application design, development and testing. He holds the role of a “delivery application lead / test manager” handling functional, volume and performance testing assignments at Accenture delivery center. Being a “Microsoft certified solution developer”‚ he had spent close to 4 yrs in Application design / coding and remaining 5+ years in testing. He had worked on all facets of the testing process which include Test Planning‚ Estimation‚ strategy‚ Test case design‚ construction‚ metrics collection and Implementation. He holds Bachelor of Engineering in Electrical and Electronics. Apart from his work routines he engages himself listening music and watching movies. |
The most common challenge faced in testing community is to ensure for optimum test coverage. However, it is very difficult to test all possible permutation and combinations; many a times the tester assumes that test coverage is been established by review processes and timely feedback. One common school of thought in improving test effectiveness is through automation, but automating the entire test suite (with all combinations) involves significant testing cost and time. Six sigma frameworks give a tangible solution for this pain area based on a mathematical approach / model i.e. orthogonal array technique (deduced from Design of experiments model). The success of this approach is that it establishes an optimal blend between Test coverage, Cost and Time. This paper details this technique in detail.
